This collective work aims first to define the concepts of handicap and polyhandicaps, and to offer an epidemiological table of them. The possible causes of handicaps are then examined, to the exclusion of causes of traumatic origin.

The handicapped child is viewed as a whole and in relation to an educative project of which it must be the subject. Although he is not the only health professional concerned, the paediatrician occupies a preponderant place in the treatment of handicapped children: his role must therefore be defined.

This work also deals with recent progress made in the treatment of various handicaps, as well as recent changes in the relevant law. It deals in depth with the social aspect relating to handicapped children (family circle, integration in society, etc).
