Standardized, illustrated descriptions of pathogens and other species of economic importance.

Descriptions of Fungi and Bacteria provides standardized, illustrated descriptions of pathogens and other species of economic importance (especially food spoilage). Pathogens of biodiversity/classification significance and fungi of importance to other applied fields such as biological control of insects and weeds, biodeterioration, biotechnology and industrial mycology are also covered. Later sets include sheets for some of the commonly met with saprophytes or facultative pathogens. Almost all fungi covered are microfungi, although there are a few sheets on larger basidiomycete pathogens.

The records, presented as PDF documents, are designed for use by plant pathologists and veterinary and medical mycologists to provide integrated information to allow identification and confirmation of the identity of significant species, along with related information on pathology or other economic significance.

Descriptions of Fungi and Bacteria are issued in sets of 10 organisms. Four sets are issued per year. Each PDF includes a detailed description of the pathogen and illustration, information about the disease caused, geographical distribution, transmission and references to the key literature.

Descriptions of Fungi and Bacteria are produced by CABI Bioscience which includes the organization formerly known as the International Mycological Institute (IMI)) the pre-eminent global taxonomy and information provider on fungi. Each description is written by an authority on that particular organism. Because of this expert authorship Descriptions of Fungi and Bacteria are widely regarded as official definitions of the species concerned. A large proportion of the illustrations are unique to the collection and a substantial number of species are not adequately illustrated elsewhere.

CABI has published Descriptions of Fungi and Bacteria since 1964. The backfile now available as PDF documents includes diagnostic descriptions and background biological information of approximately 1600 fungal and bacterial taxa, including many of the most economically important taxa.
